Vehicle Description 1968 Mercedes Benz 280 SL Pagoda This car was purchased new in CT and the second owner was neighbors to the third, current owner.
It has been in the same neighborhood for over 40 years.
She rolled off the line in Mercedes Dark Red Metallic paint and with an automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, Becker Mexico radio which was upgraded to a Becker Europa II AM/FM back in the day.
She was also repainted many years back, not under current ownership, in a very similar dark red/burgundy color in a lacquer base as the paint does show some chinaing/cracking in places.
There are a couple of small places where rust repair was fixed in the driver floor pan and in the left rear inner wheel well/floor transition.
Originally, data card shows the tops were red.
She now sports a white soft top in very good condition and a white hard top, also in very good shape.
The seats were replaced or reupholstered (in leather) under the second owner's watch.
It appears as though interior panels were dyed as well.
The second owner was not a car guy in the mechanical sense and brought the car to a local mechanic for regular service, the current owner doing most of the service themselves.
She has always been well maintained.
The odometer shows 25,000 miles, that is very probably rolled over.
She starts easily, the Bosch fuel injection working as it should, and settles into a throaty idle.
She accelerates firmly but isn't going to win any 0-60 competitions, rides and drives well.
There is a slight exhaust leak that has just started, guessing it to be the donut gasket at the manifold.
The hard shell boot operates correctly and the top folds easily up or down and attaches with Mercedes' patented top locking mechanism and lever.
All the lights, wipers and other bits also operate correctly.
The SL was designed as a driver's car, to be enjoyed.
This car will do that right out of the box for you.
However, if you strive for perfection, this car is a super solid base to start from.
